The Government of Malta announces an International Design Competition for the long term rehabilitation masterplan for the Magħtab Waste Management Complex.

The Ministry for Rural Affairs and the Environment of the Government of Malta is pleased to announce an international landscape design competition for the long term rehabilitation masterplan of the 59 hectare waste management complex at Magħtab (limits of Naxxar).

The project is considered to be of national significance and is intended to gradually convert what is now considered to be an environmental liability into a national park. The gradual implementation of the successful masterplan will allow the currently degraded site to be regenerated and converted into a Park where visitors can enjoy open spaces and natural scenery.

The Park, projected to be one of the largest in Malta, will be of significance both to the educational and environmental sector. The Park is intended to represent a leading example within Malta of restoration, rehabilitation and sustainable design.

The future Magħtab Park is located on a site with some of the greatest development opportunities in Malta. Some of the sites inherent characteristics includes its location on the northern coastline of Malta, the sites elevated position enabling views north to the Mediterranean and south to the remainder of the country and the sites central position between some of the most populated centres of Malta.

Suitably qualified participants will be able to submit designs, with the winning design concept being selected by a panel of judges composed of a number of local and international experts competent in various fields relevant to the project.

The competition has been launched on 31 July 2006, with registration beginning on 1 August 2006 and closing on 29 August 2006. The closing date for the reception competition submissions is 27 October 2006. The Registration Form can also be requested by fax on +356 2295 2231.
